Sale season in India โ whether it's Amazon Great Indian Festival, Flipkart Big Billion Days, or end-of-season retail sales โ is full of confusing discount claims. "Up to 80% off", "Extra 10% with HDFC card", "Buy 2 get 30% off" โ calculating the actual price and actual savings takes a moment. Here's how to do it correctly every time.
Simple Discount Formula
Discount Amount = MRP ร Discount% รท 100
Sale Price = MRP โ Discount Amount
= MRP ร (1 โ Discount% รท 100)
Example: MRP โน2,000 with 30% off = โน2,000 ร 0.70 = โน1,400 sale price. You save โน600.
Double Discount (Successive Discounts)
When there's a 30% off and then an extra 10% off with a bank card โ these are NOT the same as 40% off:
Final Price = MRP ร (1 โ D1/100) ร (1 โ D2/100)
โน2,000 with 30% + 10% extra: โน2,000 ร 0.70 ร 0.90 = โน1,260 (saving โน740 = 37% total off, not 40%)
| Stated Discount | Actual Combined Discount | Effective Saving |
|---|---|---|
| 20% + 10% | 28% | โน560 on โน2,000 |
| 30% + 10% | 37% | โน740 on โน2,000 |
| 50% + 20% | 60% | โน1,200 on โน2,000 |
GST on Discounted Prices
Under GST rules, tax is charged on the actual transaction value (post-discount), not the MRP. So if MRP is โน2,000 and you get 30% off to โน1,400, GST is charged on โน1,400. This is why post-discount prices inclusive of GST are lower than MRP.
