EPF (Employees' Provident Fund) is the most widespread retirement savings instrument in India โ€” covering over 7 crore active subscribers. Yet most employees don't understand how their PF grows, when they can withdraw it, and how much they'll actually receive. This guide explains everything.

EPF Interest Rate 2026: 8.25%

The EPFO (Employees' Provident Fund Organisation) trustees recommend an interest rate each year, approved by the Ministry of Labour. For FY 2023-24, the rate is 8.25% per annum, the highest in several years. This interest is credited to your EPF account on March 31st each year and is tax-free as long as you don't withdraw before 5 continuous years of service.

How EPF Contributions Work

ContributorRateWhere It Goes
Employee12% of Basic + DA100% to EPF account
Employer12% of Basic + DA3.67% EPF + 8.33% EPS

The employer's 8.33% goes to EPS (Employee Pension Scheme), which provides a monthly pension after retirement (minimum 10 years of service required). Only the remaining 3.67% from employer contribution earns interest in your EPF account.

EPF Withdrawal Rules

  • Full withdrawal: Allowed after 2 months of unemployment or on retirement at 58
