Kuwait offers some of the highest tax-free salaries in the Gulf for Indian expats, with the Kuwaiti Dinar (KWD) being the world's strongest currency. A mid-level engineer earning KWD 600/month takes home approximately โน1.65 lakh/month equivalent โ with zero income tax, zero social security deductions, and zero payroll deductions of any kind. Your gross salary is your net salary. This guide breaks down Kuwait's salary structure, labour law entitlements, and cost of living for Indian professionals in 2026.
Kuwait Salary Structure: How Packages Are Built
Kuwait salaries are structured differently from Indian CTC packages. There is no complex CTC-to-in-hand calculation โ but understanding the components matters because gratuity and overtime are calculated on basic salary only.
Typical Salary Components
| Component | Description | % of Total (typical) |
|---|---|---|
| Basic Salary | Core salary, used for gratuity/indemnity calculation | 50-60% |
| Housing Allowance | For rent; some employers provide accommodation instead | 20-25% |
| Transport Allowance | For commuting; some employers provide vehicle/bus | 5-10% |
| Food/Meal Allowance | Monthly meal stipend (not universal) | 0-5% |
| Other Allowances | Phone, laundry, hardship (if applicable) | 0-10% |
PIFSS: Social Insurance (Kuwaiti Nationals Only)
The Public Institution for Social Security (PIFSS) is Kuwait's pension and social insurance system. It applies only to Kuwaiti nationals โ expatriate employees are completely exempt. This means:
- No pension contribution deducted from your salary
- No employer social security contribution on your behalf
- No retirement benefit from the Kuwaiti government
- Your only end-of-service benefit is the indemnity (gratuity) paid by your employer
For Kuwaiti employees, PIFSS deductions are 10.5% from the employee and 11.5% from the employer. As an Indian expat, you see none of this โ 100% of your salary hits your bank account.
No Income Tax: What You Keep Is What You Earn
Kuwait has no personal income tax for any individual โ Kuwaiti or expatriate. There is no VAT (unlike UAE and Saudi Arabia which introduced 5% VAT). The only deductions from your salary are:
- For expats: Nothing. Zero deductions. Gross = Net.
- For Kuwaiti nationals: PIFSS social security (10.5%) and KFAED contribution (1%)

Kuwait Labour Law: What Indian Expats Must Know
Working Hours
The standard work week is 48 hours (8 hours/day, 6 days/week) or 40 hours (8 hours/day, 5 days/week) depending on sector. During Ramadan, working hours are reduced to 6 hours/day for Muslim employees. Many private sector companies apply the reduced hours to all employees.
Overtime
Any work beyond 8 hours/day or 48 hours/week is overtime. The rate is 125% of hourly basic salary for regular overtime and 150% for Friday/holiday overtime. For an employee with KWD 400 basic salary: hourly rate = KWD 400 / 26 / 8 = KWD 1.92, overtime rate = KWD 2.40/hour.
Leave Entitlement
- Annual Leave: 30 calendar days per year (after completing 9 months of service). Fully paid based on total salary
- Sick Leave: First 15 days at full pay, next 10 days at 75% pay, next 10 days at 50% pay, next 10 days at 25% pay, then 30 days unpaid
- Maternity Leave: 70 days (30 days before delivery + 40 days after) at full pay
- Hajj Leave: 21 days (once during employment) for Muslim employees
- National Holidays: 13 official public holidays per year (paid)
Indemnity (End-of-Service Benefit) Calculation
Kuwait's indemnity (equivalent to gratuity in UAE/India) is calculated on basic salary only:
- First 5 years: 15 days basic salary per year of service
- After 5 years: 1 month (30 days) basic salary per year of service
- Maximum cap: Total indemnity cannot exceed 1.5 years (18 months) of basic salary
